A dignity-based agenda for the LGBTQI movement

A dignity-based movement — the short version

The US LGBTQI movement has advocated for equality, privacy, expression, and safety. This letter sets out why dignity should also be a central goal of the LGBTQI movement in the US. In short, the US Supreme Court identified dignity as a guiding principle in cases related to LGBTQI people. Dignity is about self-determination. Dignity is the ability of an individual to live life according to their own identity. When laws prevent people from living according to their own personal choices, dignity is violated.

A dignity-based movement agenda would change how the movement sets priorities. A dignity agenda is particularly well-suited to address problems of race, gender, refugee status, and poverty.

This letter sets out some specifics about the LGBTQI movement and its goals under a dignity principle.
